Special Effects Engineering
Technical systems for special effects in TV and film, including bespoke builds and control systems for practical effects.
About
With more than 25 years of real world experience, I am focused on delivering robust, practical solutions in electronics, embedded systems, and technically demanding one-off builds — particularly where off-the-shelf approaches fall short.
With decades of hands-on experience in electronics design, embedded firmware, and system integration, I bring a pragmatic engineering approach to complex technical problems. Having worked with some of the UK's best companies and production facilities I have that work-earned experience that cannot be faked.
Work spans everything from low-level hardware and MCU firmware through to networked systems, diagnostics, and reverse engineering of legacy equipment. With excellent skills in 3D Modelling and prototype production.
Technical systems for special effects in TV and film, including bespoke builds and control systems for practical effects.
Firmware development, MCU-based control systems, hardware interfacing, and real-time behaviour.
Custom circuits, signal handling, interfacing, and practical hardware engineering for real-world environments.
Analysis of existing systems, legacy firmware, and undocumented hardware to understand, repair, or extend functionality.
System-level debugging, communication protocols, and diagnostic tooling for complex or distributed systems.
Fault analysis and repairs for bespoke equipment that cannot be handled by high-street repair shops. Fully equipped workshop with high quality test and repair equipment.
The focus is always on practical, reliable solutions rather than theoretical elegance. Designs are driven by real-world constraints: time, cost, robustness, and maintainability.
Where necessary, solutions are built from first principles — particularly when existing products or standard approaches do not meet the requirements.
