F1 Steering Wheel Internals
Engineering the electronics for the steering wheel used in the F1 Movie
In the F1 Movie there are some shots where you can see the steering wheel in the F1 car drivern by ‘Sonny Hayes’. In some shots this is a prop wheel designed to show exactly what the producers required at any specific time.
During shots like the crash into the wall early in the movie, this prop wheel was used. Someone else (I’m not allowed to name) designed and built the wheel itself, but I put together all the electronics inside it, based around a PI Zero, an LCD Screen and some WS2812 addressable RGB Leds.
The PI Zero controls the LCD and the LEDs to make the gear change / rev limit LEDs do what is needed and to display relevant info on the drivers LCD.
